Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmunity Is Seen as the biggest unmet medical need on a global scale

Autoimmune diseases arise when immune regulation fails and control is lost: The immune system escapes its restraints and goes into overdrive, mounting an attack on the body’s own cells and tissues. The resulting chronic pathologic inflammation causes permanent suffering and significant loss of quality of life, with no cure in sight.

Current treatments address symptoms and act through suppression of the immune response; they are frequently associated with unpredictable and severe side effects and may lose their efficacy due to acquired resistance. There is a growing recognition that the key to treating autoimmune disease lies in rectifying the dysregulation and reinstatement of control rather than in combating
the attack on the body.

Inflammatory autoimmune conditions are the Next Therapeutic Frontier

Our Therapeutic Approach

Our therapeutic approach derives from the understanding what keeps most people healthy, preventing them from developing autoimmune diseases, despite being constantly exposed to a myriad of triggers.

Alma has developed a breakthrough therapy that harnesses the therapeutic potential of its insight into the molecular regulation of immune control, to restore strict control over the aberrant inflammatory response. The treatment reinstates immune balance with no overdrive or complete immune suppression, providing autoimmune patients with durable remissions and improved safety of treatment.

Alma’s treatment aims to correct and augment the natural regulatory signals employed by the immune system in order to recruit regulatory T cells (TREG) that resolve pathological inflammation and restore immune balance. This treatment uses a native protein – human heat shock protein (HSP), an internal-biomarker of stress situations (e.g. inflammation) – to regulate TREG activity and migration: Increasing peripheral HSP production, it attracts regulatory T cells from the circulation, stabilizes and boosts them and directs them to the inflammatory site with high precision and specificity. The treatment is self-regulating: It is turned on by pathological inflammation anywhere in the body and turned off when the inflammation has been resolved.

By correcting and reinforcing the body’s own regulatory mechanism, Alma’s treatment responds accurately to the patient’s need and turns itself off when the mission has been completed.

Alma’s treatment has a unique therapeutic profile, which cannot be achieved by alternative methods.
